Woodbourne Creamery at Rock Hill Orchard is Montgomery County, Maryland's ONLY made on the farm ice cream. We make it all with our own milk and use our own seasonal ingredients when possible.
Why is Woodbourne Creamery Golden Guernsey ice cream different than "regular" ice cream? Let's start with the cows who are grazing on grass 24x7, 365 days a year. They take all the nutrients they get from fresh pasture plants, so their products contain more vitamin E, beta carotene, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids. For more information on the benefits of grazing dairy cows, checkout this article.
We make our own mix for the ice cream so we can control everything that goes into it, starting with the milk. Lots of people "make" their own ice cream, but all they are doing is taking a factory-made mix and putting it into a batch freezer. Our low temperature vat pasteurization keeps a higher percentage of milk's natural enzymes and beneficial bacteria intact which adds to the flavor and heath benefits of the milk.
Since we don't homogenize our milk (most milk is processed so that the fat globules are evenly distributed throughout the milk), the fat is randomly distributed throughout the milk, just like when it came out of the cow. Most (nearly all!) ice cream is homogenized so that each bite tastes exactly the same. We believe that each bite should taste different as that is the way nature wanted it made.
We make our ice cream mix in our small vat pasteurizer, then turn it into ice cream using an Emory Thompson batch freezer. At this point, we mix in the flavors and the fruit, then the ice cream goes into 3 gallon tubs and put into a blast freezer (a freezer with a temperature below -20 degrees, so really cold!).
Come to Rock Hill Orchard and try our ice cream and let us know what you think. If you like our milk, you will love the ice cream. We scoop ice cream in the farm market just north of Damascus six days a week. We sell quarts of our ice cream at the market and single size containers at the Bethesda market. Come for the ice cream, then cut some flowers or herbs, and depending upon the season, pick peaches, apples, pumpkins or even try our corn maze! You can visit the cows and calves whenever the farm market is open.
We started with Vanilla ice cream and have been slowly expanding our selection. Depending upon the day, we are currently making the following flavors, with more coming every month:
Do you love ice cream and the Montgomery County Fair? We sponsor an ice cream eating contest at the fair for those that want to eat large quantities of our wonderful ice cream.
